you mentioned amateur radio as part of the emergency network. Why not get your license??? The test can be passed by a 9 year old, and radios are not expensive- even cheaper second hand. The world of radio is an exciting world! Look into http://www.arrl.org/emergency-communications and volunteer to be an emergency operator in case the grid goes down, earthquake, what have you- or not! Even just chatting on the airwaves is fun. Good luck and LOOK INTO IT!
