What to do?

This first week of 2011 has had me thinking about what to do.

My subscriptions to CQ and QST are about to run out.  CQ in February.  QST in March 2011. I have also been thinking of signing up for QRP Quarterly.

Let’s talk about Dollars and Cents, the total of all these publications would come to $ 136.95.  That is if I signed up for one year of CQ at $36.95.  Continued my Diamond Membership at the ARRL at the minimum of $75.00 which would include QST.  And ordered QRP Quarterly at $25.00.

Again, that’s $136.95

That certainly keeps me in the know of what is going on in the world of Ham Radio.  But it doesn’t keep me, or put me on the air.

I could spend $140.40 and purchase a Wouxum VHF/UHF hand held with the basics to get me on the air locally here in the metro Phoenix area, and should I travel over to San Diego, as we normally do during the year, allow me to make contacts while there.

I asked my wife, what she thought and to me surprise she was in favor of me buying the radio.

OK, hams who read ARD, what would you do?

Actually there are three choices.

1.  Renew the subscriptions. (And join the QRP organization)

2.  Purchase the Wouxum VHF/UHF Hand Held with just basics.

3.  Do both.

As I finish writing this blog, I think I would be best picking one, I and think I know which one will be best, both for now and the long term.

7 Days.

Here it is only 7 days away from Christmas Eve.

The Picture is one I took on 12/08/2010, at the Desert Botanical Garden that is between Scottsdale and Phoenix.

I wish that I could tell you that KI7UP will be on the air for Christmas 2010, but let’s be realistic.

It’s not going to happen.

Unless there is one of you out there who right this minute is reading ARD and has an extra HF or not being used VHF/UHF Handheld that needs a happy new home for Christmas.   Maybe one that wants to come to the US.

I’m giggling a little as I write this, knowing that most if not all of you who do read ARD, are saying to yourselves, ” This guy is into the Christmas Bottle, a little soon”.  ( Don’t worry, I don’t drink, and there are no bottles…other than maybe a Coke or two, in the house.)

Maybe by next Christmas…and doing it on my own.

(Course if you could figure a way to drop an antenna on the house…I would not object.)

Have a surprise for you next Friday.

Not Going Away.

I had decided that I would not post any blogs during December because, I just felt lazy and had a couple other projects, sadly not money making that I felt there for awhile I had more interest in.

However, after a couple of days, of just coming to ARD and looking at the links that I have to other hams, I realized that I missed it, and the “bug” was there and it wouldn’t go away.

Now I know what I’m going to do.  I know what bands I’m going to go back on when I do.  The only questions left are specific radios, down to about 3 there.  What antennas, there I have a few more directions I can follow but I have really narrowed it down from a year ago.

I have rejoined the Local Scottsdale Amateur Radio Club….and have to rejoin the ARRL and send off a payment to CQ magazine so I don’t miss one.

One of my concerns is once I do make my final decisions, buy the gear and have it here at the house, I know that I will not be able to put it up by myself.  This body, is not up to crawling up in the attic, up on the roof, or underneath  the dash in our van.

There too I have a darn good idea of several ways to go, but one from a financial stand point makes me a little hesitant.

Now, as of today, I have decided that I’m going to post on Fridays, unless something really exciting happens, at least that way, other than looking at ARD to follow the links, I will keep talking about Ham Radio.
