I thought that I had figured out the trick to programing this radio so this afternoon after a full day away from the house I tried it.

I was wrong, it did not work.

With that in mind, it’s once again back to trying to figure out what VHF/UHF Handheld to purchase.

While I really like the little Baofeng UV-3R+, just wish it were a little easier to program.

If you will notice on the Dual Display, the top section is showing the UHF Repeater for the Scottsdale Amateur Radio Club. Just to enter the 440.00 took me just under 30 minutes last night, while watching MI-5 on TV. And my right hand was twisting the knob as fast as it could.

I had already entered the PL tone, Offset, before I started loading the frequency.

I have entered other UHF frequencies but reset the radio to start over, finding that it’s best to load one band at a time, then go to the other.

Over all my first impression is positive.

I followed the recommendation of Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF and bought the Baofeng UV-3R+.

It got here Thursday just moments before Karen and I headed out of the house to take our van to the Auto Body shop to set up an appointment to have the rear door and bumper repaired following the rear end collision I was in.

When we got home, I unpacked it and programing it to the frequencies for the Scottsdale Amateur Radio Club’s Vhf and Uhf repeaters.

On the first try, after loading everything, the Uhf repeater came up and I talked with another ham who said I had a strong signal and good audio.

The Vhf repeater didn’t come up. Found out the next morning it was off the air.

To be honest, finding that out made me feel much better.

Rear Ended.

I had just dropped off Karen at her appointment yesterday and on my way home had stopped about 4 cars from the light at Thomas and Hayden here in Scottsdale when BAM, I was rear ended. I controlled our vehicle and did not slam into the car in front of me. That was good.

Here’s the rear of our van, the door will not open unless it’s opened manually. The bumper is cut but that is the extent of the damage. And what I saw of the other two vehicles, my vehicle got the worst.

As it turned out, it was a 3 vehicle accident. There were no injuries. The lady in the vehicle behind me was shaken up but not hurt. The lady in the SUV behind her, who caused the 3 car accident while reaching down for a paper she apparently was reading failed to control her vehicle and hit the vehicle that hit me.

Have Ordered my VHF/UHF Handheld.

Well, I did it. This afternoon I ordered my VHF/UHF Handheld radio. I haven’t had one for several years and I’m looking forward to using the local repeaters.

In just a couple days I will let you know about my choice of a Handheld VHF/UHF amateur radio.

I have decided that I will wait until I have it in my hot little (correct that) hot big hands before I let the cat out of the bag.

In addition to adding a VHF/UHF handheld, I’m in the process of updating the antenna I have.

By doing so, I will be able to work other bands.

Seems like forever, but I have finally decided which Handheld I’m going to purchase. As to which one, that will come after I have received it, looked it over, maybe even gone on the air and gotten someone to come back to me, telling me I sound “great” and that it’s the best he/she has ever heard on VHF/UHF. I dream a lot.

Tom Fagan, the Arizona Section Manager has been nominated tor the KNIGHT DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD.

I would like you to follow my lead and support his nomination. I find Tom to be a Very Active and effective Section Manager, just what this award is about.

Please send an email to Steve Ewald, WV1X, include you reasons you feel Tom makes an outstanding Section Manager, how he has helped you personally as a Ham, how he helped your local club, or anything that you think shows all that he has done for Amateur Radio, here in Arizona or in General for that matter.

Support of this nomination needs to be sent in before the end of April 2012 and can be sent to sewald@arrl.org

The award is normally conferred at the July ARRL Board of Directors meeting.
